Child Rights
For promotion of child rights, an educational intervention is at present underway in 15 slums of Agra, the city famous for Taj Mahal. In each slum one primary education centre, named Nai Kiran (new ray) has been established to cater 450 Dalit and Muslim children, among whom over 80 per cent are girls.
Classes are run throughout the year and joyful method of teaching is adopted in the schools. At the end of the year, the children are evaluated.
Several changes are visible among the children:
- Capacity to learn has increased among the children and balance of their hands has increased
- Expression capacity of children has increased and they have learnt to identify alphabet, numerals and colours
- Personality of children has changed and they are cooperating in the schools
- Interest of children in art, craft, games and songs has increased and multi-faceted changes are visible in their personality
- Level of personal hygiene has increased
- Children have become disciplined
Parents of children are confident about educational and community efforts being organised of Nai Kiran. The parents are making collective efforts for solution of people's problems.
For educaitonal mainstreaming of the children, teachers, parents and children have taken out Bal Adhikar Yatra (child rights journey) to demand from the district administration to associate the children with mainstream education.
Necessary training of the personnel associated with the programme has been organised.
