Water and Sanitation
It needs no reiteration that healthy environment and clean surroundings are pre-requisites for human development. Generally, environmental issues are ignored in Gangetic plains, though it does not mean that they face lesser environmental threat than any other place.
Realising that small actions on the part of people can clean surroundings and improve environmental conditions, MSS is organising awareness drives and training programmes for the benefit of the common people. And what better way to do so is waste management.
Environment specialists have time and again sensitised and trained participating women and men to dispose off waste judicially. They have told the participants that out of the organic waste, later they may prepare compost and vermicompost. This on one hand takes care of organic waste and on the other produce manure. When these manures are used in agricultural fields and orchards, use of chemical fertilisers is reduced. This in turn leads to contamination of environment with chemicals and considerable savings to the users.
The environmentalists have castigated the culture of 'use and throw' in all walks of life. As an example they said that heaps of paan masaala pouches, mineral water bottles, polythene bags, etc., can be seen besides the roads. These are non-biodegradable and remain in the soil for a very long period. During the rains, harmful chemicals are leached down to the ground, contaminating ground water. They warned the participants if we want to drink clean water and live in clean environment we would have to get rid of use and throw culture.
