Women Issues
Women are one of most disadvantaged groups of the society. They are into focus of MSS and are given prominence in the interventions. At all the available opportunities women are sensitised about their rights, violence against them and gender equity. They are told that an empowered woman is able to look after her family in a better way. And better families mean a strong society.
More notably women are given preference in community level training, particularly in livelihood training so as to enhance food security of the families.
Though women as a whole are disadvantaged group, even among them there are still more disadvantaged groups. One such group with whom MSS indirectly works is sex workers. It is running a hostel for the children of sex workers at Thane district of Maharashtra since April 2006.
Around 50 children of sex workers are residing in this hostel. These are the children who dropped out of the schools. The children are provided lodging, boarding and education at the hostel. Vocational training is a part of the life at the hostel. The positive sign that has gone to sex workers is that even their children, who are looked down by the society and are neglected, can also get education and look ahead for a better future.
